Little things in life...

When you are given a lemon, make a lemonade! Why frown over the sour fruit that you can't eat? Squeeze the lemon, then add some sugar and ice to make a refreshing drink for yourself!

Many times, when life gets complicated and we are occupied with stuff that we view it as burden, we tend to overlook the simple things in life that once brought joy to us. Life become stereotyped.

Why make life so complicated? Let me quote from Message from God (a Facebook application):

Remember the 'Tikam' machine that you used put coins in, hoping you get the toy you wanted? Recently, there were 2 older kids who went to play 'tikam' again. On the first day, they couldn't get the toy they wanted.

They were slightly disappointed but they did not give up. On second day, they 'tikam' again, hoping to get the Lilo and Mickey. Guess what, they did not get Mickey. But they got Lilo and Pooh instead!!!

Aren't they cute?

See, life is full of surprises. As long as you keep trying and do not lose hope, you will get what you want. Even if you do not get exactly what you want, sometimes what you got will give you more happiness and satisfaction than you know.

My Elephant Section 17, PJ (Thai Food)

You know at some days you just crave for one kind of food. For us, it was Thai tomyam. Many have blogged about My Elephant at Section 17, PJ, but I have yet to try it. So since we were craving for tomyam, our instinct told us to give the place a try.

My Elephant is kinda hidden, so if you are not familiar with Section 17, you might wanna googlemap/GPS yourself there. The website provides menu and map, check it out!

We had Som Tam Malakor (Hand-pounded Green Papaya with Dried Prawns & Peanuts) and Tomyam Seafood. Although the place is located near the flats, the price of food is not considered cheap (but cheaper than Sri Ayutthya). I can imagine their profit margin is quite high.

I loved the tomyam soup and the salad. However, squids were not very fresh. Their quality isn't that consistent. And as if to compensate for the high calorie food, you will be served with brown rice which is RM3/person! So, even if u can't finish the whole plate of rice that they served u, bring the balance back to feed your dog and make your dog slight healthier for once.

Kim Gary has improved!

I can't exactly recall my last visit to Kim Gary. It was probably 2 years ago. The food sucked at that time, and I am not willing to pay that price for yucky food.

Lately, some of my friends hang out at Kim Gary quite often. So I decided to give it a try. I went to the one at Sg. Wang.

They have rather extensive menu, from the usual menu to something cheesy. I had Mango Shaved Ice and a yummylicious cheese-baked rice which looked like this:

Sorry I could not remember the price of the food I had. It isn't cheap, but probably I can afford it once/twice a month.

If you are craving for cheesy food, try this place! Food are priced at standard Hong Kong restaurant (>RM6.90 for main meal).

Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee (SS2) Sucks after Renovation

When I was studying at UM, Lorong Seratus Tahun became a natural place to go because it is located at SS2. I loved their curry mee then which was served with pig's blood cubes.

It's not easy to find curry mee around KL/PJ which has this special ingredients. Being a Taiping-ite, pig's blood cubes are necessary in our curry mee. RM5.50 for a bowl of satisfying noodle was pretty standard for PJ area.

Recently, they have renovated their place and I think it has similar concept like PappaRich and Oldtown. I prefer their old settings which was more homely.

When my bowl of Curry Mee came, I almost yelled out loud, 'WHERE HAVE ALL THE PIG'S BLOOD CUBES GONES?!' First few bites were OK. However, the more I ate, the taste became bland although I had added a big spoonful of their sambal. I checked their menu again only to notice the word 'Pork-free'.

Not only my noodles was not served steaming hot (the soup was rather warm), their curry gravy was too thin for my liking. The gravy of northern curry mee is supposed to be thin yet flavourful, but Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee failed miserably. I regretted going there, imagine my disappointment.

And if you think PJ people who speak English are educated, you are terribly wrong. The customers next to our table spoke fluent English but the first thing the bald guy did after being seated was to blow his nose loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear him and hard enough for his nose to fall off! What a disgrace.

I will not go back there again. Prices of food have increased after their facelift but quality and quantity of food have diminished. I would rather trade my RM6.50 (that's the price of a curry mee) for Yu Tao Mai (fish head noodle) at Taman Desa.

Pan Heong Restaurant, Batu Caves

It's my second time there and for both times, I made sure I ordered 'Wat Tan Hor'. It's kueh teow (flat noodles) immersed in delicious egg gravy. Those who love the fragrant smell of egg will love this!

We had porridge during my first visit, but this time round, I decided to try their famous mee mamak because I have seen many customers had this dish on their table. The verdict is I love it! I silently hope that I ordered a bigger portion (it's tasty!).

The service is quick and the food is reasonable priced. Don't worry, it won't burn a hole in your pocket. My advice is to avoid lunch hour as the place can be pretty packed and parking will be a issue as well because the restaurant is very near to a primary school. Note the opening hours and it's better to call before going. They close at random day of the month.

It's sad when you realised you are aging. By aging, I mean your age in terms of number and the way you look at things. I started to understand what life is.

If you think you deserve a place in this world, you are wrong. Life is about survival of the fittest, unless you are contented with having just enough of everything. Most of the times, we are stuck doing things that we do not like.

When I was younger, I told myself that I would not force myself to do something that I detest. Now, my wiser brain teaches me to learn how to make lemonade out of lemons!

It's not easy but I guess if I wanna survive in today's polluted society, I need to be fit!

I can't believe it. I'm still unsure if PhD is for me. Once in a while, the thought of i-shudn't-continue-with-PhD and i-shud-get-a-job-that-pays-well-and-satisfies-me cropped up. And then, I have to remind myself on why I made the decision to go for PhD in the first place.

Money is an important issue now, but I guess getting a PhD will, in the long run, benefits me. Susah dahulu, senang kemudian. But I have already susah for so long. LOL.

Today is the first day my ex-students have their lectures and tutorials with new lecturers. Wonder how they did. I can't help looking at my watch severals times today and think 'I'm supposed to have classes with them now'.

I'm sorry to give u such a shocking news about me leaving. In fact, I was not sure about my decision until last week.

I chose to see each of you personally and discuss about your work and performance. You felt so weird why I did that, right? Haha! It took me some courage to hold back my tears when breaking the news to u all. Especially when I see your stunned and sad faces.

I left in such a short notice, I'm sorry about that. But it lightens me when u said u wanna do farewell for me. SJ11e requested to take a group photo on our last practical class.

3 mths of getting to know all of u, I started to remember ALL your names. But only at this moment, I can't continue teaching all of you. I left with a heavy heart. Each of u is so special in your own ways... I sincerely hope you can succeed in your life.

Whether u succeed or not, always keep in touch. There is no failures, only people who are not willing to work hard. Take care :)

MSc Health Science (Biomedical Science), UKM - COMPLETED!

I enrolled in July 2008 for a 1.5 years' course. If u asked me how the course was, my mind is blank, really. Over dinner, I tried to recall how the feeling was when I was attending classes day after another, completing tonnes of lab reports and assignments and of course, preparing and sitting for exams. My coursemates were delighted that it had finally come to an end. And I was wondering, what my emotion/feeling was.

Really, I do not know what wrong is with me. I feel no joy, more like, relieve. Over dinner again, I kept thinking why I did not feel the same way as my friends. I SHOULD BE delighted as well, coz this course was challenging and torturing. Mentally > physically. A labourer/construction worker, they are usually tired physically. Once they hit bed at night, they will be snoring like pigs. For me, the torture is mentally. Although physically I'm tired, I could not have proper and sound sleeps during the nights. Even if I do sleep, my mind is filled with glimpses of everyday life which includes work. Silly, I know. But what frustrates me is, despite my effort to tire myself, I still COULD NOT GET QUALITY SLEEP!

That would be my summary for the course. I can't believe I let myself to go through that 1.5 years of torture. I hope it is worth it. By now, my stupid brain could have gone through evolution and hence adapted to such stress, but sadly no. I am not a perfectionist, but I get tensed up over little things. I REALLY NEED MY LONG BREAK!

Below is my result for the final semester (research project and thesis) and my overall CGPA.

Sem 1: 4.00
Sem 2: 3.73
Sem 3: 4.00

Another achievement in 2010, but nothing to be proud of. Getting 3.91/4.00 doesn't guarantee me living a beautiful life with handsome salary. At the end of the day, I am just another Master graduate looking for a dream job.

I need my break

Despite having completed my thesis and Viva for my Masters degree, I'm still pretty occupied @.@

I really wanted to take a break but I have yet convince myself to do that. By taking a break, I mean no teaching, no tuition, no labwork. Which also means, no Ringgit. I guess, everything needs some form of sacrifice =/

Pan Heong Restaurant, Batu Caves

On Sunday, I went Lumut with my mum and AhB to visit my 2nd brother who is serving National Service there. Lumut is 3 hours drive from KL. Travelled through highway and exited at Bidor, after which, trunk road all the way. KL-Bidor = 1.5 hours, Bidor-Lumut = 1.5 hours.

I caught cold when I returned to KL that day. Itchy throat, runny nose. Symptoms of common cold. I hope it is not H1N1 as I just returned from Bandung on Friday.

On Monday, I dragged myself to TARC for classes. The plan was to meet Aaron for brunch since I have 2 hours break in between. I texted him in the morning that I was still sick and I want porridge for brunch. Then I went to class and met him an hour after that.

He said, ''You want to eat porridge rite? Let's go eat good food today.'' He knew I wasnt feeling well, and he wanted to cheer me up. I said ''Ok. Where?'' He said ''6 km from here (TARC)''. But he wasn't telling me exactly where.

We ended up in Pan Heong Restaurant near Batu Caves. Their food is GOOD and CHEAP!!! Aaron googled that place because he knew good food never fail to cheer me up! We had fish fillet porridge with century egg and 'wat tan hor' (kueh teow with egg gravy). There are AWESOME! And very reasonable. Bill for 2 came to RM15.30, inclusive of 2 herbal drinks.

Bandung 19-22 Jan

19-22 Jan I was away to Bandung.

And it is INDEED a shopping heaven! Bought something for everyone in the family. And nearly dropped. Shopped til I dropped, I mean. Food was cheap and tasty. People are helpful. Taxis use meters. Weather was cooling.

This is my LEAST planned trip so far although I had booked the flight tickets a year ago. Out of 10, I'l rate my trip 6. No sightseeing this time round, thanks to AirAsia who took the liberty to change our flight times. Nonetheless, we had a great great moments there =D

I shall probably return to Bandung for shopping again, but I shall see what Bangkok has to offer me. Hihi.

31.12.2009:

I wanted to spend the last day of the year doing something that I haven't done/never do before. So, we went to Peter's Curry Fish Head at Taman P. Ramlee for lunch. The last time I went to this place was 7 years ago. Previously, this place served the famed curry fish head, but when I revisited 7 years later, somehow I felt that the quality has diminished. For dinner, we went to Quattro's Summer Restaurant with the babes, including Puven. Had Heineken (although I don't fancy beer) with meals. The food did not disappoint. Appetizing appetizer (Mango Thai Salad with Crispy Cat Fish), cheesy pizza (Pizza Quattro) and creamy pasta (Smoked Salmon Carbonara). Seriously yumzz for my standard. Not knowing what to do after dinner, the babes spontaneously agreed for yumcha session at William's, PJ with the dudes. I was like (o.O) So yeah, that's how I spent the last few hours of the day, with a glimpse of fireworks to top it off.

01.01.2010:

Came home past midnight the night before, so I was only awake at 11am. Basically, a lazy day.

02.01.2010:

One of my brothers leaves for Lumut for National Service today. The meeting point is at Bukit Jalil Stadium. He had more luggages than the amount stated in the official letter, thanks to my caring mum. We were worried that the extra luggages were not allowed on board. However, to my surprise, all the Pusat Khidmat Latihan Negara (PKLN) staff, from the bus driver to the trainer, were very friendly. Not a tint of cockiness. All the luggages were allowed on board, including 2 pails! I AM SURPRISED. Everything went on smoothly, and a Menteri in charge to officiate the event shook my hand. Another (o.O)

Aaron drove us to Lumut together with my mum and my lil bro, and we were even allowed into the camp! Met more trainers, and all were very nice people!! I hope all the negative comments about the PKLN aren't true. Went for a little food hunt in Setiawan town before heading home. A successful day indeed. My first achievement of the year!

Crap. After 1.5 years of I-dunno-what-it-is-except-constantly-rushing-for-datelines, I finally made it to the LAST dateline of the whole course.

One more stage to go (oral examination) and I am officially done with my MSc!

Suddenly I have this thought that updating my status so often in Facebook would make me sound like a Facebook addict and make the details of my life known to too many people. In my FB friends' list, I have my relatives, my ex-students (I ignore requests from my current students), long-lost primary and secondary schoolmates whom I still do not have chance to meet them in person, friends of friends whom I have only met less than 3 times and bla bla bla.

So, I decided to stop updating my status there for the moment. Instead, I thought HERE would be a better place because only people who are genuinely sincerely and busybodily interested with my life would dropby my blog.

On 24th Dec, Xmas Eve, I went for movie marathon with Aaron and Abi at 1U. Avatar (3D) at 12pm and Alvin the Chipmunk at 5pm. If you haven't watch Avatar, I don't care because I am telling you that I love the glow-in-the-dark forest. The graphic is amazing, especially when I have 3D glasses put on! Chipmunk, this time, lacked the punch unlike its first movie. BUT. Both shows were good and entertaining.

Headed for dinner with close friends at Chili's, KLCC. I think the staffs at Chili's need to do something with their waitering system. Wrong order, duplicate order, insensitive ears and re-request for the credit card because they have forgotten to close the check? What the heck. I know there were lots of people patronizing your outlet yesterday, but do I look like I care? It's Xmas eve. Your people should come prepared. That is what F&B industry all about.

I am cocky. So apa lu mau buat? If I am the boss, you are my customer, and I did not provide you with the expected service, I would have accepted your cockiness to remind me that I am not good and if I do not change my attitude, nobody is coming to me and I would lose my business!

LOL. Am so good at crapping. But on top of that, I enjoyed the company~

Tonight, another group of friends is having BBQ. At PD. At the beach! Woahhh~ Awesome isn't it? I haven't done with my thesis. And life is a single way journey. That's why I am putting my thesis on hold and go crazy with my friends. Haha!

Dad's birthday!!!

As the eldest daughter, I managed to gather EVERYBODY for dimsum in the MORNING. EVERYBODY because usually the headcount is not complete. If you have a big family, you would know. Well, there are 7 of us (including papa and mummy), not VERY big family, but certainly not a small family. *I'm lame, LOL*

MORNING because it was a Saturday morning. My brothers and sister don't usually wake up at 8.30am on weekends. So, yeah... it was an achievement for me. LOL!

I spent them dimsum since all of them were so co-cooperative. Haha! And also because I'm the eldest and I'm already earning :P

At night, Papa was supposed to be attending a wedding dinner, but he didn't go. When I reached home at 9.30pm, I was shocked to see him watching TV, because I didn't get him a cake (coz according to plan, he won't be home till late). Luckily, our family friend baked us Chocolate-and-Cheese cake on that day. What a coincidence!

While Papa was outside checking the neighbourhood, Abi and I searched frantically for candles. And we were LUCKY to found some unused birthday candles!!! When Papa came into the house, Abi and I sang birthday song for him. And I could see my beloved Papa was all smiles on his face!

I love my Papa!

Nothing much recently.

Schedule is pretty much the same except I do not go to lab that often anymore and I have less tuition hours. No good because I earn less, but good because I have more time for myself.

Despite the stress of having to meet my thesis submission dateline, I still go out for self-indulge and meet friends for TCSS moments although nothing beats the joy spending my time with my loved ones!

January is near, and I do look forward to flying! Yayyyy!!! Yet, I have not gotten my passport renewed. Probably doing things at the last minute would make holidaying more thrilling, don't you think so? Haha!

1. Scroll through my sms inbox and see what promotional vouchers are sent to me.

Was interested in the 'Free Head Charge' voucher by Redbox Karoake which only limited to IOI Mall. Went on a Sunday, lunch buffet + 11am-2pm karaoke. Only paid RM18.40 for two pax.

Why other bigger malls around KL and PJ don't have this facility?

Redbox IOI were having HongKong Food Festival, but I guess it was only applicable for dinner.

2. Go to a nearby shopping mall and see what good deals we could get by chance.

Parent-Lecturer Day at TARC

We had Parent-Lecturer Day at TARC today. Two weeks ago, my Boss asked if I can come. I told him I can't be sure because of my unpredictable schedule and I can only confirm 2 days before the event. Surprisingly, he said the committee can wait for my confirmation eventhough it is so near to the event. I felt touched by their sincerity and how can I say no, rite?

Don't get me wrong. In fact, I enjoyed myself TREMENDOUSLY throughout the whole time I was there! I reached at 8.15am for breakfast and the PLD was to start at 8.30am. The moment I stepped into the room where breakfast was served, my Boss greeted me warmly and asked me to get some bites. Why am I so touched by the hospitality? Because at the moment, I am only a part-timer there!

I enjoyed sharing with my students' parents about how we can work together to improve the grades. Some of them are very weak, so I had to tell their parents frankly. I find it sad when I looked into parents eyes and noticed that they have been working so hard to put their children in college, and their children are not performing.

They said I am a good lecturer, but I told them I am only doing my best. I think I love the satisfaction when people appreciated what I have done for them. And through lecturing, you can see the fruit of your effort when your students scored well in exams, and even more meaningful when below average students surprise you with better grades!

Ohh... I missed my moments as a full-timer at TARC. My colleagues are a great bunch of people. Even the most senior lecturer there treated me like their daughter. When I said I can't cope with lecturing and doing my Masters at the same time and wanted to quit, my Boss and my Big Boss said they have faith in me. So I stayed on... till now...

I guess I am lucky. I find joy in my first full-time job itself. I have no idea if anyone from my office reads this, but it doesn't matter. What I have posted is my gratitude to all of them who have treated me so well...

SkyBar Night

Ok. No updates for a while because I was extremely stressed. To the extend it could bring me to tears when I thought about it. It was that bad.

But recently, I think I started to see the light. Things happen for a reason. I was surprised because during the past weeks, I failed to notice that. I totally forgot that magical phrase!

So, I'm feeling much better now. Went shopping (window!) around Curve and walked till my feet sore. Did not felt so contented for quite some time already. Although I did not manage to get anything for myself, I still felt happy.

It is Roland's birthday today, so, we went SkyBar to celebrate last nite. Had liquor and felt a little tipsy. I am not telling you how many glasses I had =P Ohh.. I was estatic coz the last time I felt like this was like 7 years ago when I went to Kuala Selangor with Ricca, YokeMui and KimFoong... hahaha!

I dunno wat to write now. It's a Sunday and I am going to the lab. But it's okay... =D

Being a Korean police is so cool. They have Lamborghini, Porche and Ferarri as their police cars.

Wonder what the scenario would be if Malaysian police force has these cars too. With Evo10 on the road, there isn't much improvement in their service. What I see is a waste of taxpayers' money.

Ok, for 2 weeks, i dun have my Twinhead laptop with me. It was functioning v-e-r-y slowly, at one point, I got annoyed by its lagginess @.@

RM500 is the price one shop quoted to buy back my 5-year-old lappie. Yet, my old faithful lappie is still with Aaron (kononnya he is trying to fix it for me), and I am STILL deciding on what model of laptop to get!

Nonetheless, you have to know that as much as I don't enjoy working at the lab, I am still able to find time to do things I like =D

First of all, there are like, 3 weddings (Darren's, ShayKiat's and Farah's) that I attended this month alone, and 1 ROM ceremony (Choyen's). Not forgetting the Raya open house by Alby and Diwali open house by Jeswynna.

And then, another darling of mine, Ricca Leong, passed her MQE (I guess it stands for Medicine Qualifying Exam) after a few really depressing months! As promised, we went shopping and even planned a seafood dinner with her and Roy! (^.^)V

Had awesome food at Lala Chong twice this month. First was FOC, and the recent one, I only paid RM21.50/pax for 2 dishes of crabs, sotong, lala and paku vege. *Grinzzz*

Oh, I managed to sneak a super short holiday at PD too, albeit some discomfort. Avillion Admiral Cove. There are some perks being a Nissan owner. One of them is I get a 20% discount voucher for accomodation at the resort. Nice!

Caitlyn, 2-year-old gal of Justin's, asked Aaron "Where is the lenglui jiejie?" when he visited her toilet. She was referring to me okay. LOL. You believe it??? Hahahha... Minus the word lenglui. She was expecting me at the door when Aaron went in to their house. So cute right? *Meltzzz*

Had my car serviced and my reverse sensor fixed. Like, finally! Probably it's time to get him to spa soon...

I've been there 2 times. The first time was in July. I didn't know what to eat for dinner and I didn't feel like going back to the same places. Aaron suggested that we took a drive to Solaris Mont Kiara, and that's how we got to know of the place. I was attracted to the Cafe's name.

So what made us go back for 2nd time round? HRC sent promotional sms to their members and I am one of them. Their promotion was 40% off for second set meal during dinner. We had the same thing again because we love salmon!

What I like about this Cafe is its healthy food concept. They use organic vegetables and healthy oil in their cooking. During our conversation with Mr Lai (one of the bosses), we shared our opinions. I told him that the food is not very price-friendly.

Mr Lai said he was aware of that but could not lower the price further as the cost of buying the shoplot itself is high. RM1million for 3 storey shoplot! He is a humble guy, and the shop manager, Weyson, is also very friendly.

They have renamed their cafe to Garden Recipe Cafe. Still sounds healthy, no? It is located at the row behind Coffee Bean. Try it!

A day at the lab

... is usually hectic and depressing. Not yesterday. Aaron offered to go to the lab with me as a source of encouragement. Doing labwork is not something I look forward to, but with Aaron's company, it is different =D

I was busy the whole morning. When I finally able to escape for a short while, we headed to PappaRich with Lawrence for a quick catching up before he flies to Dubai on Tuesday.

Supposed to be another surprise birthday dinner at Food Foundry, Section 17, PJ. But when Amanda and Moon reached there, it was closed =.=

So, they came to join us who were gathering in front of JayaOne (before making our suprise attendance).

Eventually we thought The Curve would be the next best choice as parking bays are ample and there are many food outlets to choose from. Food at Bubba Gump weren't as good that night, probably because we did not order what they are famous for - shrimp!

Friday Night Out with Our Projects

Then both of them off to watched The Ugly Truth while the rest of us watched G Force. You wouldn't believe the effort we put into our projects.

May immediately jumped out from bed the moment they agreed to watch The Ugly Truth together. She bought tickets online and selected good seats for them. At the cinema, when May was getting the tickets, I quickly queued to get them drinks.

And off they went into the hall...hahahahha!

Yumchar session after that until 2am. We were sleepy but for the sake of friends... we stayed on! Hahaha! During the whole time, the male subject's phone was ringing non-stop. I believe his friends were teasing him..LOL!

Now this was a surprise!

Aaron and I was to have lunch together at Calorie, Sri Petaling. However, on my way there, I was thinking to have something different at somewhere that I have not been to. Yeah, I am a person who got bored going to same places many times.

As much as I wanted to eat something different at a new place, I could not thought of any suitable ones. A few places crossed my mind - Sri Petaling, Kuchai Enterpreneurs Park and Old Klang Road.

I know KEP has a lot of interesting food outlets, but I did not know where exactly to eat. Another fact about me: I don't like walking into a restaurant/cafe which I have no confidence in. I do, sometimes, in no-choice circumstances, but I don't like doing that. Well, since I was unsure where to spend my lunch money at, I decided that probably it's best to stick to the original plan, i.e Calorie.

Upon meeting Aaron, I was very much surprised that he was not driving me to Calorie. I asked him where he was bringing me to, but he kept mum. He is THAT cheeky! And he brought me to KEP (just like what had crossed my mind earlier) and to a restaurant that I have never tried before!

You may call it telepathy, or in a TVB drama, Fei Tin called it 'sam ling xiong tong'! I was elated!!! He totally made my day I tell you!

If you were aware of my Facebook status, I was hoping I could do something different on the special date. I was not making a big hoo-ha of the date; it's just that this combination of number only appear once in a thousand years.

Like last year, on 080808, we did something memorable although there was some silliness in it. Like 20072007 (20th July 2007), I also had a memorable experience. Why 20072007? Simply because it was my birthday! LOL...

But 090909 fell on a Wednesday. I had classes at TARC that morning. My 9.09am on 090909 was spent with my students, how sweet =.=

My initial plan with Aaron didn't work; you don't need to know why =D Hahahah...

We went Sunway Pyramid instead and treat ourselves a cuppa Starbucks.

Since Aaron's friend wasn't working at Bubba Gump that day, we decided to have a dinner elsewhere. And who says you need to dine at an expensive place to celebrate the special day? We went to Restoran Lai Kong (Sunway Mentari, opposite Pyramid) to have our favourite snacks - Little Lim Pancakes!

We were too excited that we forgot the take photos of the pancakes. We also had AhWa Hokkien Mee which appears many times in food blogs. But frankly speaking, we had tasted better hokkien mee than AhWa's.

So yeah, that's just another normal day for us. What about yours?

I blogged about my lost dog and he was nowhere to be found. Since his disappearance, our shoes (mostly my dad's and my bro's) were stolen twice in the middle of the night. My kitchen door was almost broken into.

When one of the street dogs (which guard the area around my house) gave birth, my dad decided to get a pup. Her name is Xiao Bai (Si Putih), inspired by the cartoon Crayon Shin Chan. It was Abi's idea kay, not mine. Obviously he watched too much cartoons =_=

An impromptu trip back to Taiping

My grandpa at Taiping called on Monday while I was at the lab to ask if school holiday has started. Suddenly I felt bad. He sounded like he misses his grandchildren, yet did not ask if we are going back to Taiping. I told my dad, and sorta forced him to drive home with me and Abi. The rest of my siblings had to attend uni classes and tuition.

On Thursday morning, I managed to convince Dad to go up north. The journey took 2.5 hours NETT including a toilet break in between, thanks to DUKE highway which provide immediate access to PLUS highway.

Left home at 10am, arrived at 12.30pm. Met my grandpa and aunty at coffeeshop for quick lunch coz I wanted to save my tummy space for yummy noodles which start selling at 3pm.

My fisherman uncle told me one of his near death experiences when he was out at sea. It happened at the same time when typhoon hit Taiwan few weeks ago. He managed to capture some photos before the strong wind and super heavy rain hit him.

It came with rain so heavy that when it hit my uncle's body, he felt the pain.

Nevertheless, work and life has to go on. There are also moments when he sees the most beautiful sunrise. He goes out to sea at 4am and returns at noon.

It was a day trip back to Taiping. Kuala Sepetang (also known as Port Weld) to be exact. Missed the uber yummy and extremely affordable food there. Oh, seafood is abundant too!

Sakae Sushi and Serai Satay Bar, Pavillion

He is a happy man. I am a happy girl. So both happy man and a happy girl met up and went Pavillion for dinner.

We had our dinner at Sakae Sushi. A big fan Japanese food, but not a very big fan of SS. So, what drove me there? 2 reasons:

#1. I got a Jusco voucher - Buy 1 free 1 red plate (worth rm5.90) and free a Sakae card (worth RM20)
#2. I got a cutout from magazine advertisement. Redeem a free item (worth RM5.90) for each coupon.

Such irresisitible offer! If you remembered, the last time I went SS was also because I had promotional coupons.

Unlike other branches, SS Pavillion uses touch screens instead of mice (i'm not sure if plural form for mouse is the same as the rodent mouse).

And in case your eyesight isn't very good, there are a few cubicles with 32' monitors. This is my first time there... gotta excuse me for being rather jakun.

Some of my favourites:

Bill came to RM46.25 after 10% and 5% nonsense for Salmon Teriyaki, 3 green plates, 3 pink plates, 1 red plate (2 red plates FOC) and 2 hot tea. For us, sushi for 2 usually costs above RM50, so this is considered 'within budget'.

Then, Aaron wants to have satay for dessert =.=''

Serai Satay Bar, located at Food Republic. Recommended by a friend and a blogger. We are quite full after sushi, but being a glutton, we still can accomodate some food in our big stomachs.

Ramadhan Special -
6 chicken satay, 2 condiments (nasi impit and cucumber), cucur udang and sirap selasih, only for RM9.90.

I love the satays! Very aromatic. Crisp on the outside, succulent on the inside! You should try them one day. Certainly not the cheapest satay, but it's all because it is sold at Pavillion. That also means certain level quality must be there. Aunty Rina (boss) said we can request them not to overgrill the satay if we do not want them to be too 'hangus' (black).

But I think they could improve on their cucur. At the end of our meal, Aunty Rina approached us and asked if we enjoyed the food. She is a nice lady, and I can see that she is sincere in asking for feedbacks. I told her I love her satays, but not her cucur. Conversation flows into what kind of cucur that I like. She thanked me for my comments and mentioned that she will look into it. Very humble.

just in case u dropped by here, here's a little update:

for the past week, i took a break from labwork simply because UKM KL is closed. H1N1 cases were reported from students staying at hostel. so how did I pass my week? by doing things that I like to do =D

i caught up on sleep and tv. when i do not have tuition classes, i go for yoga classes. yesterday, i went makan with aaron, roy and amanda at sentul coz I was craving for fsh head curry. dinner for 4 cost on RM68, for 4 dishes: medium sized fish fillet (instead of head) curry, signature banana leaf squid and prawns, nam yu fried chic wings and kangkung belacan.

tonite, another round. haha! seafood at subang. awwww..... crabs. prawns, squid. yumz!

at the moment i have a research proposal to do, but heck cares. my indulgence is more importance than forcing myself doing something else. LOL!

In order for you to understand why I spent average 11 hours at the lab during a weekday, allow me to quote from Wiki:

"In molecular biology, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique to amplify a single or few copies of a piece of DNA across several orders of magnitude, generating millions or more copies of a particular DNA sequence.

The method relies on thermal cycling, consisting of cycles of repeated heating and cooling of the reaction for DNA melting and enzymatic replication of the DNA.

PCR is used to amplify specific regions of a DNA strand (the DNA target). This can be a single gene, a part of a gene, or a non-coding sequence.

To check whether the PCR generated the anticipated DNA fragment, agarose gel electrophoresis is employed for size separation of the PCR products. The size(s) of PCR products is determined by comparison with a DNA ladder (a molecular weight marker), which contains DNA fragments of known size, run on the gel alongside the PCR products."

Here is the summary in form of graphics:

My PCR reaction takes about 5 hours to complete, minus the preparation time. Once it is completed, I have to check if the PCR is amplifying the DNA fragment that I wanted. So, I used agarose gel electrophoresis. And below are the image that I got:

This is Gel 1 (using primers from Company A).
The most left and most right bands are the DNA ladders (to show how big is the DNA).
In between the ladders, I ran 10 samples for PCR.
Dat's why you could see 10 not-so-nice bands and lots of smearing.

This is Gel 2 (using primers from Company B).
Do you see very nice and bright bands??
This is the results that one should get if PCR is working fine.
And I got it today!!!!!!!

Why is there a difference between two gels although I am using the same DNA sample? I guess it could be the primers from Company A has degraded or old.

I was at the lab at 8am and left the lab at 7pm today. When one gets such nice bands, it is all worth the waiting. Something that makes me stay on course...

Hopefully, my research will go smoothly... *fingers crossed*

How I spent my birthday and the day after that

Celebrated with a huge bunch of friends at The Apartment on Sunday, a day earlier. Aaron and I overestimated the place. The seating was bad, the food was below average and it took them ages to serve. Probably because of the number of people who turned up. 21 of them, excluding me.

Food and drinks aside, I had a great time with their company. Well, the celebration wasn't solely about me. It was also to celebrate Roy's birthday which was 5 days earlier than mine. Aaron and I planned to surprise him a little. Haha! Adjourned to William's after that.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for all who turned up on Sunday. My friends since secondary school and Aaron's buddies. You all rock! It was one of my best birthday celebration ever! =D

But fun time has to end... for the last 2 weeks, I have been going to lab on weekends. It sucks, having to work 7 days a week and constantly worrying about things that are not within my control. Done the DNA extraction for yeast the second time round, but it wasn't very pure. My supervisor told me to proceed with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and these are what I got today:

The purpose of PCR is to amplify the DNA. To make it higher in amount. Those images were from gel electrophoresis. If DNA is present, it will be detected as bright bands in the images. So... after a whole long day at the lab today, I am pleasantly surprised by the results! But bands are not very clear in the second image... shall repeat it again tmrw...

Labwork is very tiring... my feet are sore, my back hurts. I gotta persevere anyway. I am 4 months away from the finishing line and I WANT to make it there!!!

DNA extraction from yeasts

After growing my yeast for 3 days starting last Tuesday and going to lab on Sunday, I finally got the DNA. *Yay*

But too bad, because I dried it for too long, I had difficulty suspending them in nanopure water. Resorted to long vortexing (I'm not supposed to vortex them, but then, if I din vortex, it wouldn't dissolve).

So, I got DNA, no doubt, but it was all sheared. All broken into fragments. Conclusion is, I failed. And I'm repeating it this week.

Lately, the lab technicians set up a very stupid rule. For our research, we have to sterilize most of the apparatus and solutions before using them. This is to avoid any contamination by unwanted microorganisms. Eg. I'm dealing with fungus, and I do not want any bacteria to grow together with my fungus. For sterilisation, we use autoclave machine, whereby we subject the apparatus and solutions to 121 degree Celcius for 15 minutes.

This very important machine, is now being kept in a lab which we do not have the access to. For autoclaving, we are required to follow the lab's schedule. 10am for useful materials, and 2pm for wastes. If u want to use at other times, sorry, they would not allow you.

ISN'T IT RIDICULOUS?!

Ended up, I have to wake up before 7am and be at the lab latest 8am to prepare my stuff for autoclaving. Then work in lab until 4+pm. And go tuition at 5pm till night. That's my routine on weekdays. Each time I come home, I'm flat.

Can't wait for all this to be over....

Short update

Sorry for the lack of updates.

My work on fungi has started to roll. Hence, the long hours at the lab and exhausted brain and body at the end of the day. Good thing I have a very helpful friend at the lab to compensate for my tardiness.

Nothing very significant happened lately. Every single day zooms past like nobody's business. Uurrggghhhhhhh!!

Lack of updates rite?

I don't know why. I have been busy, and when I am not busy, I use the time to recharge. I guess once you hit 25, metabolism and attention span decreases. Just about 1.5 years ago while I was lecturing, I worked Monday to Friday 8am-8pm (sometimes 9pm) and Saturday 9am-12pm. And I still have energy for the weekend outings. Now, I am working 18 hours a week (part time teaching, that is) and I am as sluggish as a slug (?).

Blame it on my Semester 3. Research. Didn't you hear me complain numerous times about how much I hate it? I know. I should find a way to love it, just like how I love Aaron and my family & friends.

My Semester 2 exam results was out! It was not as good as Semester 1, but it was still within my expectation =)

Semester 2 was tough. Like, TOUGH. Totally like a crash course. Depressing. I am glad I made it.

Lately, my buddy Kim Foong is back from UK. Charlenne was back from Singapore last weekend. Pamela is back from UK for good but flying to HongKong soon. All of them were my secondary schoolmate. It is nice to meet up again!

Unprofessional email

We know how useful emails are these days. Secondary to phone calls I would say. Few days ago, I got pissed by this email which asked for my address.

First of all, what will your reaction be if a stranger come to you and asked for you phone number? I was in the situation before. At TM Point samo =.=''' This middle-aged Chinese guy was sitting next to me.

Apek: Do you mind to give me your phone number?

Me: (Stare at him) For what purpose?

Apek: (Caught by surprise) Ermm, just to contact. Add to my network.

Me: (Stern voice) No la, I don't think it is necessary. So, nope.

He was clearly embarrassed being rejected and walked away and never return to where I was sitting. Idiot. Yunno, people don't call me cili padi for nothing.

Back to topic. This Chyi (the person who sent me the email) requested for my address so that she/he could 'mail something' to me. I did not like that. What is the 'something'? Idiot. And 'please reply me'? Nonsense.

Subsequent emails from her stated that she/he is just a trainee and her manager asked her to get addresses from their customers. Another idiot manager. Hey, you wanna retain your pool of customers and you don't even have time to train your staff to type proper email?!

Since the manager did not 'train' this Chyi properly, I shot out this email:

I am guessing Chyi is doing internship at the hotel. Whatever it is, I think the college that she attended should have taught her public relations/communications, especially when she is studying hospitality.

I am not cocky. Professionalism is the key in whichever field your job is.

School's reopens = teaching at TARC commences = occupies 1.5 days of 7 days a week.

Hate it. Dunno why... I know it's money. But... like I said, I dunno why I am in such a low state now. I simply dislike all the obligations at the moment.

I do not mind spending time with Aaron just by doing nothing. I do not mind doing anything at all, except anything related to Uni and work.

I am such a lazy bum. Despite me getting enough sleep, I get tired by mid day. Blame it on the weather. I know I should feel lucky as I still have earning power although I'm doing full time course.

This morning I was thinking, probably going away for half a year will make my positive attitude return. *sigh* If only I could afford it...

What should I do to change this stupid attitude of mine?!

Since last week, I have been trying to get my fungus isolates. Science officer said next weeek (this week). She wasn't around on Mon and Tues, so I went to see her today. And she told me she is rather busy this week, 'Minggu depan boleh?' =.= After a short discussion, she said she will give me 'petang nanti'.

Been waiting the whole morning to get my agar plates dry and sterilise them with UV rays. Damn. I hate waiting.

What is the luckiest thing that happened to me during my course at UKM?

To be able to learn under a humble but very experienced lecturer, that is.

Sadly, Professor Yap K. L. has to retire for good. His retirement was supposed to be 5 years ago, but thankfully, he chose to continue his contract until he reaches 60. Which otherwise, I would not have to chance to know this great teacher.

I knew Prof Yap since 2007. I enquired about the course through phone and he was the person I spoke to. In 2008, I decided to apply for the course. But when my application got rejected (probably because I submitted past dateline or my first degree from UM did not sound convincing enough, LOL), I was lucky to have met Prof, who then helped to put me into the course.

Down-to-earth, fatherly, helpful, kind, responsible, dedicated. UKM just lost a great educator and researcher. Last Friday was his last day at office. Prof is now doing some gardening perhaps.

In his email, he said (referring to the photographs), ''It is like looking at one tired Autumn fast fading to Winter surrounding by a number of Springs.'' Humorous, ain't he?

Bak Chang (Dumpling) Festival

The best bakchang would have to be the ones made by my paternal grandma. She had left us for 9 years now. Since young, I have been eating her bakchang until she was too sick to make them. 9 years have passed. I am in the quest of searching bakchang similar in taste to the ones my grandma made, but to no avail. I am afraid I will soon forget how tasty it was.

Our bakchang now are supplied by my maternal grandma and family friends. None matched hers. Sometimes, I missed my grandma so much that even when I wasn't hungry, I would eat the bakchang, just to get back the fond memories. And most of the time, I was left frustrated. Coz no matter how many bakchang I ate (and yunno how filling bakchang are), I still could not find the same taste and feeling back.

I was glad that I was at kampung to help her with bakchang preparation for once. The only one and only time. I was in my teenage, and at that time, I thought making bakchang was a mess. My hands were oily. My grandma would fill the folded leaves with rice, and I would put the ingredients (meat, yolk, mushroom, the-round-thing-which-I-dunno-the-name, dried shrimps). Then she would cover them with rice and wrapped the bakchang to perfect tetrahedral shape.

Those were the days. I missed those days. I wish I could learn more from her. When she was sick, I treated her the best I could; fed her, talk to her even though she wasn't aware of her surroundings, helped to clean her, held her hands, massaged her legs, kissed her cheeks.

When we got the news of her passing at 7pm, I insisted that I followed my dad back to kampung. Mum didn't allow me to follow because I was having MUET speaking test the next day. I insisted. Throughout the journey back to Taiping, my dad and I were overwhelmed by silence. Tears flowed freely.

It was a very sad image. I alighted from car, walked to my grandma's home. My relatives were there, chatting. Walked nearer to the door, I saw my grandma. Lying still in a wooden makeshift tent. Coffin hadn't arrived yet coz it was already late. My emotion went loose, I shouted for her to be awake. No response. Until at one point, my aunty had to pull me away to console me.

I have no idea why the post on bakchang leads to this. As I was typing, my eyes swell with tears. After these years, I still miss her dearly. How I hope I can see her again, in my dreams. I just wanna hold her hands and hug her once more. I missed her smell.

By the way, this was the bakchang made by Roy's mum. Catherine was so thoughtful; she insisted that Aaron took one more extra for me =)

Cameron Highland - Day 2

We skipped many of the attractions in CH such as Cactus Farm, Bee Farm, Rose Farm and you-name-it-farm. Mainly because that was not the main reason we went CH. Lol! Our trip to CH was, what we called, weekend escapade/getaway from the hustle of Kuala Lumpur.

What we did there was just to chill, enjoy the weather, inhale as much fresh air as our lungs could take, hunt for good food and whack the road.

Day 2, I was the first to be awake. Loved the chilly morning! Had a brief breakfast at the newly opened restaurant below where we stayed:

Food was pretty good and reasonably priced. A recommended place to get a quick bite.

We planned to go downhill from CH via Simpang Pulai way. So, first we dropped by The Smokehouse, just for the fun of DSLR-ing.

Then, we dropped by a market at Brinchang (the same place where tapak pasar malam is) to get our final round of CH specialities. Like corns (they are really sweet), strawberries and tea.

Our final destination at CH was the famous Boh Tea Farm. Getting there was an adventure. Narrow hilly roads with sharp corners, meant for one-way traffic. We got stuck for a while because there were incoming cars.

I went Boh Tea Farm with my buddies 7 years back, and there is no extended deck nor a cafe yet.

I do not normally take strawberry flavoured food, but going to CH where strawberries are abundant, I shall break the norm for time being.

All happened in split second!

We enjoyed the scenery of the lush greenery, coupled with freshly brewed tea. But going out of the farm was a nightmare. Nearby the area, there were kenduri and a religious ceremony taking place. Cars parked at the side of the already so narrow road. Took us about 1.5 hours to get out from the farm. In a hot afternoon samo =.=

Reached KL just in time for Angels and Demons. It was certainly a wonderful weekend escapade!

Bubba Gump Shrimp Company @ Sunway Pyramid

Last month, Aaron went Bubba Gump without me. I pretended I was upset. Then, he promised to bring me there one day. LOL!

So, on one fine night...

Verdict: I should have tried other drinks.

See Aaron's reaction, haha! It didn't really taste that bad; I would say probably it needs someone with acquired taste to like the drink.

Bubba Gump has a perk-me-up type of environment. The deco, there are so much to look at.

Aaron's highschool friend was a staff there, so we were really delighted to have discounted price off the total bill. And That Chocolate Thing, either it was on the house or the waitress/waiter did not key it into the system. Oh, and Aaron's black coffee was FOC too! (^.^)

Thank you Bubba Gump for the wonderful dining experience!

On a side note, we were given 'Security Tips' upon entering the carpark. The guard stood at the carpark entrance and distribute this little note to drivers, complete with the telephone number in case you need their assistance. They really put themselves in the customers' shoes, (even though they stink), don't they? LOL.

Also, I must give credits to Aaron for insisting to bring me to this place!

Cameron Highland - Day 1

Post exam relaxation trip cum weekend escapade. Although the duration was rather short (2D 1N), we enjoyed the trip tremendously. On Saturday morning, before starting the journey to the highlands, we have a very Malaysian breakfast at Damansara Utama. Restoran Dharoos. Shall never forget the name, coz BB, Aaron and I went round DU five times (or more than that?) to look for the place. Dharoos is a small restoran and we were supposed to meet up with Roy and James there.

Dropped petrol station to top up whatever necessary and we hit the North-South Highway right away.

Even before we reached CH, I was already thrilled. This was one of the rare occasions where we got to bring the devil out!

Of course, Aaron does not normally go at this speed, neither do I allow him to do so.
Only when the traffic is very obliging.

We stopped at Bidor for lunch.

According to Taikor, this restaurant serves delicious herbal duck thigh noodle. Initially, I did not order my portion. But as I tasted Aaron's noodles, I decided to order one for myself =D

Restoran Pun Chun is a very famous restaurant at Bidor. I believe most Bidorians would be able to show you the direction to this place.

We had the dried version of the noodles, which comes with separate bowl of herbal duck thigh soup. RM6.50 per portion.

There are a lot of snacks sold at the restaurant. Worth checking it out.

Satisfied with the meal, we hit the roads again. Exited at Tapah and we were at the beginning of the winding roads up CH.

Taikor and James took corners like a pro. Well, they ARE pro. Fast and furious. Even Aaron couldn't catch up with their furiousness. =p

Along the way, we stopped by this breathtaking waterfall. Lata Iskandar. There is another waterfall - Lata Kinjang, but because it is not located along the journey, we gave it a miss.

The pros busy snapping away with their DSLR, and sakai like me folded my pants up to knee level and went into the cooling water! Hahaha... more photos in Facebook (find the links at the end of the post).

Back to roads again.

Dropped by Bharat Plantations for photos and yumcha. Bharat is a smaller tea plantation compared to Boh tea farms. But, definitely worth the visit.

I love it.

Finally, after a few stopovers, we reached our apartment around 3.15pm.

Located at Jalan Royal Lily 5, Tanah Rata. Owned by Catherine's relative. RM180 per night. Complete with kitchen utensils, water heater, Astro, and can accomodate 8-10 people. Since there were 5 of us, each of us only paid RM36 for the comfortable place.

Took a short rest and started food hunting at CH at 4pm. First stop, a market at Brinchang.

I just have to tell you how thoughtful Aaron is.

He was very occupied with work, and I was very busy with studies. After my exam ended on 8/5/09, he took a long leave (12 days) just to make up for our lost time. The 12th day of non-stop fun has just ended. Temporarily.

After this weekend, my official holiday is over too. My new semester is scheduled to start next Monday (25/5/09). No more classes to attend or exams to sit for. This semester involves purely research work for my dissertation. Now, the blur sotong gotta work in labs and figure things out :o(

Not to forget the 20 hours of teaching per week. If only cash falls from the sky~!

I love food. When I am free and have no other plans in the way, I would go and look for new food to try. Last week itself, I pampered my tummy again.

1. (Flying) Wantan Mee

Description: Old school wantan mee by the road side
Location: Seapark, PJ. Further down the road from the IndoMee Famous Seapark Nasi Lemak, or if you don't know, it is further down Seapark Maybank.
Awesomeness: 3 out of 5
Comment: Noodle was quite soggy for my liking. The braised chicken feet with mushroom wasn't too bad, but it was served cold. At least serve it warm maybe? Opens 6pm onwards.

2. Little Lim's Man Cheng Kueh

Description: Westernised Chinese Pancake. Crispy sides. Amazing taste.
Location: Restoran Ahwa, 66, Jalan 14/48, Petaling Jaya
(Note: Located Behind the Shell Station, near the Honda Showroom).
Another branch is at Restoran Lai Kong, Sunway Mentari.

Comment: I love this! All pancakes are freshly made upon order. Ingredients are fresh, pans are clean and the stall operator is friendly. Fire is well-controlled, so you would not get burnt sides. If you do not know what to order (they have wide selection on their menu), just tell the operator to make his decision for you. Opens 6pm onwards.

Location: I went to the Sunway Pyramid branch.
Awesomeness: 2 out of 5
Comment: Sakae sushi isn't one of my options when it comes to sushi. I always prefer Sushi Zanmai for the freshness. The reason I went Sakae this time was because of their promotion. If you present coupons cut out from newspaper (The Star), each customer would get a free item.

This plate of Salmon Sashimi (4 pieces) worth RM5.90 was free-of-charge.

The soft shell crab in crepe (top) worth RM5.90 was also free-of-charge.
By the way, look at the plate at the bottom of the photo. I am very positive that the plate was reused numerous times without cleaning. And I paid service charge? *Gosh*

Teatime buffet is available. But even with the price, it still would not be my choice.

This lucky man got himself a pair of new jeans. Haha.

A short update. Am quite busy with classes.

My classes at TARC started last week. My students... ok la. Some still innocent, some kwailan (mischievous), some are loud. Those kwailan ones will get it from me if they do not change their attitude. You can't imagine how I chased a student out of the class before. It happened. LOL! And the student came back apologizing to me. Sweet!

A week = 8 hours at TARC + 12 hours of tuition = damnnn!!!

Especially now, the exam season.

Ohh, the Cameron Highland trip was awesome! Couldn't be better. Loved the speed. =D

Kuala Kubu Bharu - Day Trip

Tuesday 12/5/09. Impromptu trip again!

We did not know what to do for the day. Aaron loves the driving experience in his Myvi. So he suggested that we go to Kuala Kubu Bharu, Hulu Selangor to look for Roy taikor. Here are some photos of the journey =D

After a number of corners, we were surprised to catch a view of a lake.
Dr. H should bring us here to do water sampling practical. Haha.

What a serene view... Too bad we din not alight from car to get a proper view. Aaron was hungry as he skipped breakfast. We thought we could dropby here again on the way back for more photographs. Mana tau we lost our way and ended up using another route to return to KL. Haha! What an adventure!

Maktab Sains Mara Hulu Selangor (if I remembered correctly) is located somewhere along the way. So secluded lah the school. Aaron was driving quite fast, road was kinda bumpy; I had hard time taking good shots of the sceneries. DSLR noob mah... But this photo below turned out to be surprisingly beautiful =)

After passing by Batang Kali town, there is another stretch of road before reaching KKB. The view reminded me of my trip to Pos Orang Asli at Kuala Mu, Sungai Siput.

Reached KKB finally. But overshot to KTM station, which wasn't a bad thing at all. Otherwise, I won't be able to take this photo. Loved the lallangs.

KKB town where Roy taiko is. A very peaceful little town. I think Taiping town has busier traffic than KKB.

Upon reaching taiko's shop, he was very understanding. The whole journey to KKB took us about 55 minutes from Sri Gombak non-stop. So, he asked, ''You all wanna go toilet first?'' Hahaha... I guessed he could see from my face that I had a fully filled bladder =.=

The famed teochew porridge shop was closed that day. We had the famed Loh Mee instead!

HoChiak 8TV reviewed the food too. This is the earliest and oldest Ulu Yam Loh Mee shop. Handmade noodles, with very distinctive taste of vinegar. 4.0 out of 5. Cooked differently compared to KL Loh Mee. Should try if you are there!

Ubi keladi on the floor. As baits for mice maybe. Haha!

Taiko was smiling kambing. Hmmm.. Dunno what 'ahemm' jokes they were sharing. Lol.

Ohh... Aaron got me a 'souvenier' from KKB. So sweet of him. 18k white gold necklace to replace my broken one. =D

We left shortly after lunch and headed to MidValley to get bus tickets his relatives from Singapore. Aaron brought me to a cafe owned by his friend. The Warung. Conveniently located at the KTM entrance/exit.

I never like artificially coloured drinks, but Aaron insisted that I should try their sirap bandung. Refreshing and not very sweet. 3.5 out of 5. Acceptable.

Fast car + lovely boyfriend + understanding buddy + good food = Exciting and pleasant trip!

But I went out shopping with the gals, haha!

Ricca drove us around. When she sent me home, my mum gave them some kuih talam that she made this morning to be shared with their family members. So sweet of her. She wanted to gave them kuih ubi too, but it wasn't ready yet. Next time ok, gals...

For Mother's Day, Aaron and I bought apple vinegar drink from Eu Yan Sang. Reviews had it that it is good for detoxification and also helps in suppressing cough. My daddy was having slight cough, so we bought 3 bottles of apple vinegar drink for RM99. Promotion price. 2 bottles for my family, and 1 bottle for Aaron's mum as Mother's Day gift. Glad that she likes it!

As for my mum, my youngest brother Abi, handmade a card. Really thoughtful of him. I gave my mum a blouse. She had wanted to do some wardrobe shopping, and reminded us to bring her to shop when our exams are over. Haha! Will do, mummy, since my exam's over =D

I'm going on a trip next weekend! Yayyyy~~!!!

Catching up with friends

I am already at the end of Semester 2. One more semester and I shall finish my course. Time flies so fast!

When we first enrolled into the course, there were 10 of us. In Sem 2, we had to choose our electives. I chosed Infectious Disease and some chosed Chemical Pathology. So, this afternoon, after my exam, we met up again and did some catching up. Too bad, the Chem Path students still have presentations after their exam, otherwise we could have gone to a more exciting place *grins*

We had lunch at Hale's Kitchen at Plaza Rah. Their daily set lunch is quite reasonable in terms of price. RM4.50 for nasi minyak (with chicken rendang) and iced tea. They have different set lunch for different days of the week.

I am delighted! Finally, someone realised what an ass she has been all this while. But the irony is, although we have proved that she is an ass, she still thinks that she did no fault. =.='''

I'm not saying I am perfect. Nobody is perfect for goodness sake. Sadly, being an ass, she doesn't realise this, up till now.

Too bad she is too comfortable in her little own world. I am not upset for making one less friend, for I believe there are more people worth being a friend; I am only upset to have known someone who still thinks so highly of herself and does not realise her flaws despite all that happened.

Haha... It is a joke, don't you think so? Me think she resembles Proteus vulgaris... LOL!!!

Vincent's farewell

The guy you are about to see below decided to go UK and find his angmoh wife there.

So, we blessed him and threw him a farewell dinner yesterday night. It was supposed to be only Aaron, Ben and I. We wanted to give him a surprise by inviting the others too. But because of the stupid jam around KL last night (Labour's Day eve), we arrived really really late. Nevertheless, they were very excited to see us:

Elvin was too happy that he almost fell off his chair. Vincent too. He almost had facial seizures.

The late comers got to sit while the rest had to stand:

Muahahaha. All the guys were colleagues from a same company back in 2005. Vincent and Aaron were posted to Hong Kong for 6 months in 2006. They were sharing a room in Harbour Plaza, North Point, HK. I went there for a week after I completed my thesis write up, for a short holiday.

In their room, there were two single beds joined together. I shared and slept in the same room as Vincent. How romantic. Had insomnia because of his snores. LOL. Nah, I was just making it up. Haha. That was how we got to know each other.

Tenji @ Solaris Mont Kiara - Supper Buffet

An impromptu arrangement. It was my third time there since their opening. Some commented that their food quality has dropped. But I find it still reasonable. Probably you have to avoid lunch and dinner time when the place is almost full house.

I went once for lunch and dinner. And now, supper. I would say, the customers volume is so much lesser (about 15 tables at most?). So, no need to 'fight' for the oysters, sashimi and Haagen Daaz icecream. Ha!

One setback I noticed was the size of their oysters. During my first visit there (lunch), the oysters were as big as my palm. For me, it was too big for one mouthful. This time round, the oysters had shrunk in size. Nevertheless, they are still void of 'the smell', which is a good thing.

Muhibah:

I think 3 times at Tenji is sufficient for the time being. But I will miss their sashimi and oysters.

Some personal entry...

The HOD of Chem and Biology, called this morning... what a pleasant Monday morning...

He asked if I am free to teach part time at TARC. I was touched. At least they remembered me when they are short of staff. I resigned mid last year to pursue my Masters degree.

He said I would have 8 hours of classes a week. I am paid according to the type of class I handle. Practical classes RM*5/hour, and tutorial RM6*/hour. I guess I will have 6 hours of practical classes and 2 hours of tutorial. Dat means, I would get RM**00 a month! Good thing is.. they contribute EPF even for part timers!

However, I am quite worried about my time management. I still have no idea what research topic I will get for my 3rd semester, and I have no idea how much time I will have to spend in the lab doing my research. For the first half of the day, I was rather anxious and undecided. I texted the lovely senior. She assured me that teaching is now much easier as all tutorial booklets are already prepared by them.

I personally feel that this is a chance not to be missed. As for my research project and my tuition classes (10 hours/week OMG!!), I shall see how thing goes...

p/s: I jst realised I am doing 10 hours of tuition a week... I din know until I counted right before typing it out here! =_=

Last Sunday was one of the happie days. Reasons:
1. Lunch date with old buddies
2. Ricca drove me to Sri Petaling
3. Accompanied Aaron for lunch at Calorie (again!)
4. Great dinner at Delicious

After several attempts of arranging the date with Stalla, we finally met up last Sunday to celebrate her belated birthday. At Canne's Tea House.

Ho Chiak reviewed Canne's Tea House before. Personally, I thought the food isn't that good, but acceptable lah... I like the ambience though; very homely feel.

Affagato is so damn good i tell you! Imagine this: White coffee kao + full cream milk + vanilla icecream. Chilled. Heavenly~! I wasn't sure if it was really vanilla icecream in the glass; it tasted like vanilla, but then it din really taste like vanilla. Doesn't matter. As long as the superb drink enters my tummy.

Oreo Smoothie, on the other hand, didn't disappoint. Loved it too!

I drank Affagato ordered by Aaron. The more sips I took, the more I felt I was in heaven!

Nevertheless, another yummylicious dish. Smoked salmon blends perfectly with the angelhair. The aftertaste.... fantastic!

Before you proceed with the photos, I thank Jason aka Sleepwalker@LYN for informing Aaron about Nose Warehouse Sales three weeks ago. I also thank Aaron for bringing me there. He is on post-nightshift, but despite his fatigue, he insisted that he was fine.

The sales starts today at 10am. We reached about 1035am. We thought we were kiasu, but there were about 100 people more kiasu than us! I don't like kiasu people, however, I think I can accept the kiasu attitude when it comes to warehouse sales, not just any sales.

C'mon.... RM10/pair!
How to keep kiasu-ness at bay?

It didn't take me long to find my sizes. Nose has been very kind; all heels and slippers were separated according to sizes. After half an hour, I found these:

Bought 2 bags too. Am not a fan of bags; I just took those I think are practical.

After an hour at the warehouse sales, and sweating (though not as bad as during my yoga sessions), it is time for an early lunch. Pasembur @ Sri Petaling roadside!

Went to this restaurant few weeks ago, but didn't try their signature dish. So, today I continued my food hunting mission.

One of their special set menu:
Read in blogs that their Honeydew Prawn Salad RM14.90 (bottom left in the photo above) is good, but we didn't try it today.

Instead, we opted for Hawaiian Papaya Seafood RM9.90.
Underneath the cheese are prawns, fish fillets, squids and coleslaw-like salad. Not to mention the edible sweet papaya flesh! Very creative.

Set meal: Pork rib black egg rice + sea coconut = RM10.90
The best part that I like about pork is its ribs. The ribs were well marinated, cooked to perfection with XO sauce. Apparently their 'black egg' is century egg. Half the egg samo.. This dish was good!

I am not a rice lover. Nevertheless, I ordered what they are popular for.

The pumpkin was baked till soft. Scraping the pumpkin and eat it with rice... very nice I tell u!

It was a very filling meal and something different than usual Hong Kong style restaurants. It is reviewed by Ho Chiak, judging from the sticker pasted on the glass door. The place is packed during lunch hours starting from 12pm to 2pm. Try it yourself one day!

Ancasa was having a two-day promotion - on 4th and 5th April. Hi tea for only RM9.90++/pax, from 2.30pm until 4.30pm. I booked online, and Zen settled the payment. It was RM45.60 for 4 pax; or RM11.40 per pax. All on Zen. Thank you, gal!!! Muaksss~

The food wasn't that bad. Almost all were edible. It was only RM11.40 per head. So dun expect food like abalone, shark fins, oysters, scallops etc lar. The most 'expensive' food they served was the ayam masak merah and steamed fish fillet. Both were good. Their chocolate cake and cheese cake were good too! Of course, they had more desserts and snacks compared to main course. Hi tea, mah!

We did not complain. We got what we paid for. RM11.40. I think we ate more than that! Hahahahahahhah!!!

Internet was down

A day after I openly criticised TM for its slow service, my Internet failed on me. ADSL light kept blinking and disappear.

For a moment, it struck me that it could be a form of sabotage by TM. But then, another question struck me at the same time. Is TM that 'efficient', in the sense that they read what was posted about them in blogosphere?

Nevertheless, I called 1300-88-9515 for technical assistance on Sunday morning. En. Hafiz on the line was helpful. His attempt to reset the port for me was not successful. So, he created a report for me.

I called the same number again this morning at 8.45am. I read three quarter of The Star while waiting for my call to be picked up. That was how long I waited. The guy who answered my phone seemed slightly irritated by the enormous amount of calls he has to pick up. But I talked to him nicely, asking him to mark my report as 'Urgent', and thank him.

At 10am, TM technician, in his mid-20s, came to my house! That was really efficient! Hahahahah.... Before he went off, I asked if 'Ada apa-apa kena charge?'. The guy, being 'nice', said 'Ohh takde....(smile) Tapi kalau u nak bagi, boleh gak...(smile)'. I buat bodoh, and gave him a can of chilled Season's Cincau drink.

So, my internet is back to normal now. Will update u on my makan session with my Dearies soon!

Assignments no more!

At least for this semester...

I AM FINALLY EVENTUALLY DONE WITH ALL PRESENTATIONS, REPORTS AND MINI PROJECTS!!!

Yesterday afternoon. I forced myself to complete it. Really no eye see! The long essay on 'Evolution of innate immune system in vertebrates' is the toughest of all. I read word by word, sentence by sentence, trying to comprehend English articles which sound so French to me. Ok lar... I can understand very basic French. The articles sound Spanish to me...

I read them many times. Until my patience is over the limit. I dun care. It is only 10%. I am just gonna write what I understood. So, I submitted my last assignment of the semester today at 2.15pm!

did you remember when was the longest time you had to wait for your turn at any centres?

I went TM Point Setapak at 1145am and took my number. 2066. Current number then was 2043. I went to ask for the application status for the phone line which I had requested on 09/01/2009. Yep, u saw it right. On January, I sent in my application personally. It wasn't fixed. Until now.

Congratulations, TM! Not only your broadband sucks, the way you handle phone line application sucks too! (Or am I the only unlucky one? I don't think so)

My turn came at 1.05pm. Showed the lady the request form she printed for me ages ago. And she started typing deftly at the keyboard. Then hilang behind the counter for at least 10 minutes. Reappeared. Typed on keyboard again. Disappeared. Reappeared. Made phone calls. Disappeared. *@$#!&^*%

Seemed that their system could not locate the port based on my home address. So advanced, OMG!

Yet, I showed no temper. No point. Plus, I was tired of waiting. Got out from that place at 2pm.

I know it's Friday today. The day of the week with the longest afternoon break. But, they are not understaffed. In fact, 3 out of 4 counters were attended most of the time. Probably what they need is a better computer system and more efficient people.

Now I better hope my slightly more than 2 hours of waiting will pay off. I shall see if the technicians come to my house within 3 working days as claimed.

Otherwise, someone will get screwed by me. BIG time!

A week at HUKM

Part of my course required me to go to Diagnostic Laboratory (Microbiology) at HUKM for 'training'. That was what Prof. H said. 'Training'. Indeed. In our printed schedule, it was aptly written as 'Laboratory Placement'. Now, that sounds more accurate. Training is not the word. I shall tell you why.

This diagnostic lab is in-charged of all specimens from patients of HUKM to diagnose any diseases that are related to microorganisms. Specimens like blood, urine, stool, pus, swabs, sputum (that is your saliva+phlegm) and CSF (from spinal cord) are sent here to be processed and the final results of what bacteria, virus, fungi, protozoa etc found in the specimens will be reported to doctors.

All specimens here are of high-risk. As we were there for merely a week, the staff did not really bother about us. We did not get to do hands-on, which we would rather not. So, we four stooges were practically a nuisance there. In Cantonese, we called ourselves 'jo teng'. Really.

1/10 of the photos I have taken during my one-week placement there. This showed that I was really bored and free with nothing to do.

This is how the specimen looks like upon arrival at lab. Packed in transparent plastic bag, complete with report form and unique barcodes.

Blood collected in BacTec bottles. Barcoded.
Urine in sterile containers. Barcoded too.

5 different agars to culture bacteria:
Pink- MacConkey, Red-Blood agar, Brown-Chocolate agar, Translucent-Nutrient agar, Dark brown-Blood agar anaerobe.

Antibiotic discs.

Machine to measure antibiotic discs sensitivity. Not bad. Some places still do manually.

Clear zone means that the antibiotic (infused on discs) has killed the bacteria. No clear zone, means that the bacteria is resistant to the particular antibiotic.
Lesson: Do not simply take antibiotics. And please, finish your antibiotics as specified.

Cabinet to keep the bacterial cultures for a week, after which they will be discarded.

Staphylococcus aureus growing on blood agar. An experienced staff will be able to identify it immediately, but she still has to perform biochemical tests to confirm it.

Minimum turn around time from the moment specimens are received to the generation of results is 3-5 days. That means, after doctor has taken the sample (blood or watever), the doctor will only get the results after 3-5 days. If the patient is lucky. Then only will the doctor prescribe the correct treatment. Very long if u ask me.

However, in view of suspicious bacteria, they use API kit (below) to confirm the diagnosis based on the colour change which will translate into codes.

The codes (numbers, in the form below) are then be entered into their computer system which can produce results with high accuracy. Shown here, the sample contained Salmonella spp, with accuracy of 99.8%. This patient must be having diarrhea and food poisoning.

My dog, Rocky, has been missing from home slightly more than a week ago. It's all my mum's fault. She let him out on a fine morning for him to pee and poo, and he never come back since.

This isn't Rocky's first time merayau outside our home. Ever since we moved to a new house, his cage has been placed behind my house, complete with water. We allowed it to wander and he always come back during his dinner time. Twice, he was missing, but he returned safely two days later.

But this time is different. A week has passed, and no news of him yet.

Coincidentally, a friend who is also a tenant of my parents' house, Kim, and I, dreamt of Rocky last night. So, this morning, both of us decided to go to Pusat Kurungan Haiwan DBKL at Jalan Air Jernih, Air Panas to check if Rocky is there. That is the place where all dogs that are caught wandering without licence are kept.

Now, I dunno if it is a good news or otherwise. Rocky isn't there. According to a staff at PKH, they will leave the dogs they caught in cages for 7 days. If they are not claimed after 7 days, the dogs will be euthanised. Rocky has been missing for more than 7 days. So, if he was caught on the first day he went missing, more than 7 days have passed, and Rocky could have already been put to sleep.

A chat with the staff revealed that Rocky may have indeed been put to sleep. However, his description of my dog is very vague. The only description he can gave was 'yang belang belang macam harimau'. No other specific description was given. You see, when Rocky went out that morning, a chain that we used to tie him against the gate was still with him, and it is VERY unlikely that he could remove it by himself. Dad said that judging from his way of putting the chain around Rocky's neck, Rocky could not have removed it.

So, yea. I am not going to believe that Rocky has been euthanised. Or has he been caught. He might still be outside, wandering, marking his territory and flirting (or even mating!) with the bitches! Although he is a 'paliyah' dog (mongrel) to some, Rocky is special to us. He might have his own antics that sometimes pissed us off, but that is him. That is what made him unique.

Rocky is a smart dog, smart just like the one blogging here. Haha! He will soon find his way home...

p/s: I bring no camera today, so could not take photos of the conditions at PKH DBKL. And no recent photo of Rocky too. He has a brownish-black coat with not-so-obvious brown stripes, and a white patch on his underneck. If you happen to see him, please feed him some food and water first, and then contact me. Occasionally when I visited other friends' blogs and see no updates, I would feel abit disappointed. Especially so if that friend is a close buddy of mine. So, since I do not update my blog on a daily basis, I could understand if you feel disappointed when you see no new posts. With that in mind, I have prepared something that you could do. This morning, Zen texted me about promotions on FOoD! In the Star Metro today, there are three ongoing promotions: Jogoya (buy 2 free 1), Cititel Midvalley buffet RM35nett and Ancasa Hotel and Spa RM9.90++ for Hi Tea!!! Wooooo...apa lagi... Almost immediately I booked Hi Tea at Ancasa Hotel! Jogoya is kinda tempting too, but I am waiting for someone else to take 'the step'. *Ahemmm*

Just to let you know, travelling and eating is my favourite past time, so I click right away with new friends who share the similar interests. The next time you go makan-makan, or any trips, count me in lah... (why do I sound desperate?)

This week onwards, I officially need not attend any more lectures. According to schedule, I am supposed to be doing my mini project write-up. However, remember I was whining about my 16 reports to be done? I have FINALLY completed the last report at 4am this morning.

What are left now :
1. Recent advancement in the epidemiology and treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis (under supervision of Professor Kamel)
2. Evolution of the vertebrate immune system (under supervision of Professor Yap)

I have decided to leave it aside for the moment. I need a breather. Since I started Masters of Health Science (Biomedical Sciences), my life has been so hectic and sometimes in a mess.

Exam is coming up on 20th April. Isn't that cool? Simply about 3 weeks away and I have not revised a single thing since the semester started! Hohohoho... Let's see what results I would get this time.

In February, Aaron told me that he would plan a short trip to prevent me from being burnt out. You see, there are tonnes of work to be completed in a limited time. The word 'stressful' isn't enough to describe my situation. I am probably mentally and physically exhausted?

So yeah... Aaron is thoughtful in that way. Knowing I love having fun, eating and doing absolutely nothing that makes any sense, he organised this trip to Malacca with the Fast and Furious gang. We have been there few times, but this trip would be different. And I shall tell you why:

We were not alone:

First destination upon arrival, Hoe Kee Chicken Rice Balls. Everything was walloped clean.

We had two bowls of chendol each in a day. Talk about sugar spike. Not only that, we also had lotsa rubbish in our tummies that day.

The fast and the furious:

Dinner @ satay celup. We were initially queueing up at Capitol Satay Celup, but then we saw this new shop few doors aways from Capitol. Gave it a try and we were happy! Especially James, he got a lot of free leftovers from the pretty ladyboss.

Yunno... when u put the satay sticks into the pot of sauce, some of the balls, etc. might drop off and sink to the bottom of the pot. The ladyboss would come to stir the sauce occasionally and that was when she scooped the 'lost and found' food to James. He was a lucky guy. =D

With overdosage of satay celup and the influence of the new Street Fighter movie, this was the outcome, 3 guys doing abugit. LOL... it was like street performance and the passers-by laughed at these three monkey:

Trying to 'draw' the FnF word, but my tiny camera couldn't capture it. Now, DSLRs came in handy.

Supper - Portugese grilled fish at Portugese settlement. This particular dish failed miserably, but what was more important was the companionship. =)

On Sunday, when I got back from Melaka trip with the gang, I was upset to find that my house phone wasn't working. The phone line cable from the pole to my house had been broken. Lodged a report through 1300 888 123 immediately then, but till today, I am still internet-less at home =(

Desperate for Internet, I brought my lappie to HUKM only to discover that I have to register my damn lappie at Pusat Teknologi Maklumat and I shall only get my password within two days. Isn't that efficient? At least I do not have to wait for a week. *duh*

I am at HUKM for the whole week this week for my laboratory placement. Today is my 2nd day here and I see no purpose of my existence here. So, while 'they' go minum (u know who lah), I came to library to use the PC and hence, this post.

Well, the actual purpose is to check photos on Melaka trip on Facebook, but the page loading is agonizingly slow. As I finish typing this post, I can assure you that the FB page is still loading. That is if I am lucky. If I am unlucky, it will say IE cannot display the webpage. =S

So, yes. I am unlucky. IE cannot display the webpage. Not because FB is blocked, but it is the speed of the line. The speed is superbly fast that my FB page just flew through. How funny.

'Ello peeps!

Another long week has passed. We were having Diagnostic Microbiology the whole last week and the session will continue for another two weeks. Remember I said I was super blur during the lab?

Well, after the manual identification tests for bacteria, I managed to identify the bacteria in my samples correctly - Escherichia coli (which causes diarrhea) and Steptococcus pyogenes (which causes pharyngitis). But it is not entirely because I am smart. I thank Kim, Sohdha and Sueying for helping me throughout the session, without whom I would be as blur as a sotong.

And it is Sunday again! I love Sundays!

Simply because it is Sunday! The only day in a week that is free from chaos-ness. Haha.

Overall, the hygiene level of the orang asli kids are not satisfactory. Despite having proper toilets, they still defecate in streams and riverbanks. And most of them has worm infections at different intensity (based on our examination of their fecal specimens).

So, last Wed 4/3/09, Sohdha reminded me about deworming pills. I took Zentel on Thursday.

And GUESS WHAT?

I think, I saw worms in my shit when I poo-ed just now!!!

I couldn't be sure though. Because I didn't use my fingers to pull out the 'thingy' and snap photos of it. Well, I should. Nevermind, the next time I shit worms again, I shall bring it to my lab. Muahahaha~!

Microbiology??!!

I was so lost these few days.

This whole week and next week, we have to do diagnostic microbiology. Hands-on. But all I learnt in my undergraduate was just Mikrobiologi Am. Arrgghhh!

You would not want to know how I made a fool of myself with the bacteria. Both my myopic small eyes and my idiotic brain were overcome by my broth culture samples. How can I mistaken Gram positive bacteria as Gram negative bacteria, and vice versa?

Unforgivable.

I do not even know how to streak on agar plates. Shame on me.

Tomorrow we are going to do biochemical tests to identify what type of bacteria they are. And trust me, when I heard abt biochemical tests for the first time of the week, my mind was blank. I am that dumb.

During the heavy downpour yesterday evening that caused massive jam and flash floods, I was in library hunting for Diagnostic Microbiology books. Self-study again. :S

But my coursemates have been very supportive. They waited for me to complete my Gram stains and subculturing. Kim helped me to reconfirm my bacteria by doing another set of Gram staining, Adeying and Sohdha helped by screening through my slides.

And YOU helped by reading this dumbo's blog. Which I hope will be successful in entertaining you.
